SAGE meets the publishers of tomorrow

Oxford Brookes – Working in Publishing Day

Earlier this month, SAGE attended the annual ‘Working in Publishing Day’ held at Oxford Brookes University. The aim of the day was to encourage the students to consider what they will do once the course is over and find out more about the range of companies they can work for. The day was attended by around 70 postgraduate and third-year undergraduate students from the Oxford International Centre for Publishing. In the morning they attended panels made up of alumni and publishing recruiters and in the afternoon around 30 publishers took part in a ‘speed-dating’ event. This involved 15 minute slots with one of two students at a time asking us about SAGE and what advice we would give them about working in the industry. We were really impressed with the variety of questions we had from the students; the questions ranged from how we got into publishing to what we thought about open access. All the students were keen to know what skills are important and what they could do to make their CVs attractive to potential employers.

It was a really lively afternoon and we were delighted to meet so many enthusiastic and engaged students. We returned to London feeling reassured that the future of publishing will be in good hands!
